VOLVER A EMPEZAR , EXPATRIADOS SENEGALESES

Every week twelve planes arriving from Spain land in the colonial city of Saint Louis, in northern Senegal. None of the passengers are tourists: they are all illegal immigrants who have been repatriated to their country by the Spanish government. They react with resentment to the return to their country. Many have walked miles or travelled on precarious boats to flee from situations of unemployment and poverty. We know of the experiences of some of these immigrants, such as the story of Mustafa, who has attempted twice to enter Spain. Both times he has had the same result. His mother helps him in his dangerous attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean. On the beaches of Dakar thousands of youths wait their turn to get on the next boat to Spain. A women's association is fighting to avoid youths from putting their lives in danger in order to fulfil their unrealistic dreams. They are the mothers of youths who have left Senegal in search of the Promised Land. These women all have something in common: all of their children have died in the process. 11 million Senegalese have a common belief, a deep rooted idea: to migrate to Europe. Even those who have tried and failed want to try again
